Edward Machtinger, MD, Program Director, describes why WHP is unique.

Our Patients

WHP was among the first programs in the country dedicated to HIV+ women and is a national model of care for this vulnerable population. The Program provides service to over 200 women from all backgrounds and income levels. However, over 80% of our clients are African-American or Latina and, for them, HIV is only one of several major health or social issues they face.

HIV impacts women and minorities now more than ever. One in three new HIV infections nationally are in women. Over 70% of new HIV infections are in minorities. HIV is the leading cause of death in African American women between the ages of 25-34. Internationally, 50% of HIV/AIDS cases are in women.

The face of AIDS is changing: It is now minority, and increasingly female.

Despite many challenges, with the help of WHP, our patients are able to become and stay healthy and successful in their lives. Please see the stories section to see and hear many of these real life success stories.
